When we promote how to save for your retirement, we usually suggest that it helps to think about how you envision your life after work. Usually, we think of being happily free and mobile, travelling the world, or visiting family, or taking up new hobbies, etc. But we seldom think about the later retirement years when we may need assisted living support. For some that could mean living in your home for the rest of your life with outside personal care support. For others, it could mean moving to a retirement home or an assisted living facility. This three-part series, based on research conducted by the National Institute on Aging, we will examen these costs in each province. This first article will look at the Maritimes, Quebec and Ontario. By studying these numbers and important data points, we might have a better understanding of what to expect when we reach our 70s, 80s and 90s, so that we save more effectively in our working years.
