You know that amazing feeling you get when you find $5 in a bag or jacket you haven’t used in a while? It’s the kind of thing that adds a spring to your step for the entire day, as you try to figure out if you should blow the whole thing on a fancy coffee or save it. Now imagine if you found out that you had money parked in a dormant group savings account. Throughout your career, you might have a few different gigs and that could mean that you might have dormant RRSPs or other savings accounts associated with those old jobs.
If you suspect that you may have some leftover accounts with a past employer, calling the human resources and/or benefits departments is the place to start. Some places may ask you for an old employee number. But if you don’t have that information, they usually can find your records with your name, address, telephone number and in some cases, part of your social insurance number.
So what do you do if you find forgotten money? Consider transferring the funds to your CEIRP RRSP or other CEIRP accounts.
